Bell Bay Solar Farm (Tamar River, TAS)
Climate Capital completed the development of Tasmania’s first and largest grid-connected solar farm in November 2023, delivering a 4.95MW facility in George Town, adjacent to the Bell Bay Advanced Manufacturing Zone. The $7 million+ project was entirely designed, built, and commissioned by Climate Capital’s in-house team.
The site was acquired as a run-down 13.5ha industrial landholding, with the objective of establishing a solar farm to support new and existing local industries. The project was developed with an initial behind-the-meter (BTM) energy supply model, ensuring long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) for local businesses while maintaining secondary revenue opportunities.
Construction commenced following an extended grid connection process, with the solar farm completed within eight months. To optimise land use and reduce environmental impact, the project deployed PEG technology, a fixed-tilt solar array requiring 80% less steel and no concrete, limiting the footprint to 5.5ha and reducing long-term maintenance costs.
Strategically positioned within Tasmania’s largest industrial hub, Bell Bay Solar Farm contributes to the state’s green energy mix while enhancing energy security, particularly during periods of low hydro generation. The project has already outperformed performance modelling, attracting interest from prospective partners.
With a project IRR aligned with market expectations, Bell Bay Solar Farm represents a stable, long-term investment. Climate Capital is actively exploring the integration of battery storage to moderate spot price volatility and provide additional grid services. The success of this development is driving further investment in solar projects across Tasmania, reinforcing the state’s transition to a sustainable energy future.
